Today Jess sets herself a styling task and uncovers key ingredients for a boho Jungalow look

I know you, like me, spend time drinking in the images that the The Jungalow team create and curate. Nicki’s own home is a text book example of this beautiful bohemian style so it’s no wonder she has collaborated with the LA based team on many occasions. My home style touches on this world but there are parts of my house that definitely don’t; like my guest room. I had an afternoon free recently (gasp, that never happens) so I decided to channel my inner bohemian and restyle it, revealing key elements that make this look sing.

Here is a reminder of the before:  JT-blog4-1

Fun but kind of basic, eh? We keep the guest bedroom fairly unadorned, so stripping it back was easy enough, giving me a blank canvas for a quick boho Jungalow makeover… a boho-over. Is that a thing?

My go-to styling trick to take a neutral palette from blah to hurrah is to vary the textures of all surface areas and it’s something that you will notice Jungalowians doing too. A white waffle quilt gave me a good neutral base on the bed. The pom pom (*chenille) throw was a thrift store find, as was the sisal cushion. A sisal cushion is as comfortable as it sounds (…like sleeping on burlap), but it does excellent things to the look of this space! My rumply linen mustard pillowcases made the cut for the new look, adding warmth and rich colour to the space.

Boho doesn’t have to be completely unpolished. My lamp works well in its new setting, with its brass finish and clean lines sharping all the rough textures and the neutral palette. The woven side table is a definite 70’s throwback (love love love) and the curvy decor pieces also hint at this era. Tick and tick. Baskets are a no-brainer, especially when they are used to hug your greenery.

Why attend to your indoor jungle with an old plastic watering can when you can have as something as handsome and special as this! You know those moments in a store where something stops you in your tracks, tunnel vision sets in and you make a purchase on autopilot? I had that moment with this handmade brass watering can.

Plants were the first thing I pulled into the room. I don’t need to say any thing more about plants, y’all know they are the mandatory element in a Jungalow look. Can’t have a jungle without plants!

Having an extremely cute dog isn’t necessary for the look but my rescue dog Charlie has the right idea by showing some love for the flat weave rug in rich earthy colours and a slightly navajo pattern. This shot puts the bow wow in boho 😉

So what did I learn about making a home a little bit more bohemian?

  • Plants, plants, plants Hanging, on the floor, on table tops- wherever you can add them!
  • Texture is key Rattan, sisal, velvet, silk, leather, linen and so on. Natural and worn is best
  • Warm metallics Add a little polish to sharpen the look
  • Throws & cushions Layer them up and go with patterns and styles from around the globe
  • Sculptural decor Add shapes that hint at the mid century and beyond
